The capacity to learn is a gift; the ability to learn is a skill and the willingness to learn is a choice

  • Brian Herbert

Every enterprise is a learning and teaching institution. Training and development must be built into it on all levels. While training is an act of designing a frame, development is an act of filling the content in the frame. There is nothing training cannot do. Nothing is above its reach. It can turn bad morals to good. It can destroy bad principles and recreate good ones. It can lift men to performing excellence. In training, there is no winning or losing, there is only learning.

Educating yourself does not mean that you were stupid in the first place; it means that you are intelligent enough to know that there is plenty left to learn. Intellectual growth should commence at birth and ease only at death. We must realize that life is growth and if we stop growing technically and spiritually, we are as good as dead. Personal development is a major time saver. The better you become, the less time it takes to achieve your goals.

An organization’s ability to learn and translate that learning into action rapidly is the ultimate competitive advantage. Tell them, they will forget; teach them, they will remember and involve them, they will learn.

If you think hiring someone, training them and having them leave is expensive, try hiring them, not training them and having them stay. The only thing worse than training your employees and losing them is to not train them and keep them. Employee training is vital for retention and motivation and is often cited as an influential factor for new employees when choosing a job.

To be sure, the fundamental task of management remains the same; to make people capable of joint performance through common goals, common values, the right structure and the training and development they need to perform and to respond to change.
